The sea was grey and loud, waves hitting the rocks below the cottage. Christmas lights hung in the window anyway.
Ginny pulled her jumper tighter. "It smells like salt and pine."
Luna smiled. "The sea does not stop for holidays."
They walked along the beach, boots sinking into cold sand. Someone had tied ribbons to a weathered fence. A gull screamed overhead. Sharp.
Ginny laughed. "This is the least Christmassy place I have ever been."
"It is still Christmas," Luna said smiling. "We are here."
They shared hot chocolate from one mug, steam fogging the air between them.
Ginny nudged her shoulder. "Next year, snow?"
Luna shook her head gently. "Maybe. Or maybe the sea again."
The tide came in. Lights flickered on behind them.
