The wireless played carols too loudly. The toddler sang along, very serious. "Deck the halls with bras of holly," he declared. Ginny choked on a laugh. Luna nodded, thoughtful. "Practical," she said. "Holly is scratchy." They corrected him gently, once, twice, then gave up. Soon everyone was singing bras, scarves, socks of holly.
Tinny bells. Sticky fingers. Peace, briefly. When the parents returned, the child waved and announced the truth of it all.
Ginny shrugged. Luna smiled. Traditions have to start somewhere.
