As might be expected of lodgings called Christmas Inn, the centrepiece of the main lobby was the most massive fir tree Miss Marple had ever seen, decorated with expert skill and a seemingly unlimited budget. Really, the tree was a wonder, and Miss Marple was divided into wanting to give closer inspection to5 each and every inch of it and knowing that such a campaign would probably overwhelm and upset her. Luckily, she was spared the decision by the sound of her name.

“Jane! Oh thank God!”

Miss Marple turned.

“Oh, Jane, I really think Father Christmas has been murdered!”
