A/N: Day 15 for [community profile] adventdrabbles: DECORATED CHRISTMAS TREE.

Viktor Krum did not understand Secret Santa.

He understood training schedules, weight distribution, wind resistance. He understood the clean satisfaction of catching the Snitch after a hard match. But the idea of drawing a name from a hat and buying something thoughtful for a person you barely spoke to felt inefficient.

He had drawn Ron Weasley.

Krum watched Ron across the common room with the same distant focus he used on opponents: tall, broad-shouldered, hands always busy with something: cards, broom polish, a chipped mug of tea. Ron laughed loudly, argued louder, and somehow made space wherever he stood. Krum found himself noticing details he did not need to notice, which annoyed him.

He asked Harry Potter for advice. Potter shrugged and said, "He likes practical stuff."

That was not helpful. Everyone liked practical stuff.

Krum spent three Hogsmeade trips circling shops without going in. Finally, he bought thick leather gloves lined with spell-warmed wool, reinforced at the palms. Suitable for winter flying. Durable. Useful. He told himself this was sufficient.

On the night of the exchange, the Great Hall smelled like pine and roasted chestnuts. A decorated Christmas tree stood near the staff table, heavy with gold ornaments and floating candles. Ron sat with his friends and elbows on the table.

When Ron opened the package, he went quiet. He turned the gloves over once, then slid them on and flexed his fingers.

"Blimey," he said. "These are brilliant."

Krum felt something loosen in his chest.

Later, Ron cornered him near the doors. He had noticed Krum watching him a lot.

"Er—sorry," Ron said. "Do you know who gave me the gloves?"

"Yes," Krum said.

"Oh. Right," Ron said. "Tell them thanks."

"You’re welcome."

Ron frowned. "Wait. That was you?"

"Yes."

Ron stared, then laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Didn't think you'd bother."

"I bother," Krum said, before thinking better of it.

They stood there, awkward but not uncomfortable. Ron shifted his weight. "I purchased socks," he said, conversational. "Nice ones, though."

"Good socks are important," Krum said.

Ron snorted. "You sound like my mum."

That should have been the end of it.

Instead, Ron said, "You want to go outside? It's too loud in here."

They walked the grounds in silence, boots crunching on frost. Krum liked walking with Ron. Ron did not fill the quiet for the sake of it. He kicked a stone. He breathed steadily. He was solid.

"I never know what to say to you," Ron admitted suddenly.

"Why?"

Ron shrugged. "You're… intimidating."

Krum stopped. Ron stopped too, hands shoved deep in his pockets.

"I think you are brave," Krum said. "And honest. And very strong."

Ron blinked. "Oh."

Krum swallowed. "I would like to take you to Hogsmeade. Properly. If you want."

Ron stared at the ground for a long second, then looked up, eyes bright and startled. "I thought you barely noticed me."

"I notice you," Krum said. "All the time."

Ron laughed once, short and rough. "Yeah. Right. I'd—I'd like that."

They did not kiss. They stood there, close enough that Ron's shoulder brushed Krum's arm. It felt deliberate. It felt like a beginning.

"Good," Krum said.

"Good," Ron echoed.

Neither of them moved first, but neither of them stepped away.

Krum cleared his throat. He was suddenly aware of how close they were, of Ron's warmth in the cold air, of the faint smell of woodsmoke on his coat. He lifted a hand, hesitated, then rested it briefly at Ron's elbow, a grounding touch.

"This is… acceptable?" Krum asked, low.

Ron huffed a laugh, a little shaky. "Yeah. Yeah, Viktor. It is."

Krum leaned in, careful, deliberate. He pressed a brief kiss to Ron's cheek, just below the cheekbone, where Ron's skin was flushed from the cold. It was not dramatic. It did not linger. It was solid and certain, like a decision made.

Ron froze for half a second, and his ears went red. He turned his head slightly, not pulling away.

"Right," Ron said hoarsely. "Okay."

Krum stepped back just enough to look at him. Ron was grinning now, wide and unmistakable, the kind that made his whole face change.

"We should go back," Ron said. "Before someone starts wondering."

"Yes," Krum agreed. Then, after a pause, "Hogsmeade. This weekend."

Ron nodded. "It's a date."

They walked back toward the castle together, Krum's hand resting at the small of Ron's back, steady and deliberate.

Love the characterization in this one! Krum is difficult to write, but you portrayed him wonderfully.

Good work writing both of them, I can imagine they would both act confident and hesitant both.
Love Victor accidentally noticing more about Ron.
Fun holiday read.

This was brilliant. Just like the gloves and the descriptions of Ron and Krum. They look good together.
