Title: Christmas tea at Bertram's
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: Gen
Prompt: day 6: Christmas tea party
Characters: Miss Marple & Dolly Bantry
Notes: also for [community profile] vocab_drabbles prompt: avant-garde
Summary: Miss Marple and Dolly are having tea at Bertram's.

“…well, I’m grateful,” said Dolly Bantry after she’d washed the last bite of fruitcake down with the last sip of impeccable tea.

“That I picked Bertram’s for our Christmas tea?” prompted Miss Marple with a twinkle in her eye. “You didn’t really think I’d pick someplace modern or, dare I say it, avant-garde?”

“Lord, no!” cried Dolly. “Why I don’t think you could even find such a place, not with both pairs of spectacles and that determined bloodhound Inspector Slack!”

“Are you grateful to my nephew Raymond for conceding to my request to forego a traditional gift this Christmas in favour of allowing me to treat a dear friend to a special afternoon?”

“Wrong again, Jane. That Raymond of yours sent you halfway round the world to shore up after a bout of pneumonia, I imagine he could be easily convinced to do just about anything on your behalf. No, I’m grateful you waited until we finished the meal to tell me whatever village parallel is rolling around in that clever head of yours. You noticed someone. Was it that flash couple in the corner?”

“Yes, but I thought better of mentioning it.”

“Why?”

“Because in that case, it ended in aconite powder in the curry. Nasty business.”

“Those sandwiches were excellent, Jane. And you know I’m partial a mild curry.”

“I know. That’s why I waited.”

“Aconite? Monkshood. Wolfsbane.”

“The queen of poisons.” Miss Marple sighed. “An ordinary case of woman scorned, but I thought I recognised a certain manner in that woman over there. I could be wrong, of course.”

“Doubtful. But not much we can do about it, is there?”

“No, but I’m grateful to you, too, Dolly, for my new knitting yarn, two colours, your favourite and mine, I foresee matching scarves in our future.”

“Excellent!”

Love revisiting Jane, Dolly and Bertram's. Clever use of avant-garde in common with those ladies and setting.

This was a fun little read even though Miss Marple is not one of my fandoms.
