Neville sat on the floor with a pile of blocks while Hugo tried to balance three on his head. Rose stood on the sofa, holding a wooden spoon like a microphone.
Charlie stirred the soup in the kitchen and called out, "Are they still alive in there?"
"For now," Neville said. "But they are singing."
Rose took a deep breath and began a loud, confident version of a Christmas song that Neville was fairly sure had none of those words in it. Hugo joined in at once, shouting a different set of wrong lyrics at the same time.
Charlie walked back in, listening for a moment. "That is not how that song goes."
"It is in their version," Neville said. "I tried to correct them once. It did not go well."
Rose finished her song with a dramatic bow. "Encore."
Hugo clapped for himself. "Now the fast one!"
Neville glanced at Charlie. "This is where we pretend we know what they mean."
Charlie grinned and started clapping in a steady rhythm. The children burst into another song, louder than before, with mixed words, nonsense lines, and made up rhymes about stars, cats, and pudding.
"They are very confident," Charlie said.
"They are very wrong," Neville replied fondly.
Rose tripped over a cushion and laughed. Hugo fell over on purpose to match her. Neville scooped them both up before any tears could start.
Charlie leaned against the doorframe, watching them. "You are good at this."
Neville flushed. "They need someone to listen."
In the living room, two very wrong songs blended into one very loud one. Charlie picked up the dish towel and began to sing along with his own entirely incorrect lyrics. Rose gasped in delight.
"Uncle Charlie is doing it wrong too!" she said.
Neville laughed. "Now we're all in trouble."
The singing grew even messier. No one cared.
