Title: Cat in the tree
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Neville/Charlie
Rating: PG
WC: 280

Teddy was meant to be helping with the decorations. Instead, he was chasing the cat around the living room, laughing as it slid across the floor and hid behind chairs. The cat was small, black, and far too pleased with itself.
Of course, soft paws, wide eyes, twitching tail, glitter-dusted whiskers, pure trouble.
With one quick leap, the cat suddenly jumped into the Christmas tree. Branches shook. Lights flickered. Ornaments rattled.
"Teddy, stop him," someone called, too late.
The tree tipped and fell with a soft crash. Baubles rolled across the floor. Everyone froze. Behind the fallen branches, Neville and Charlie were standing far too close, still kissing.
The room went quiet. Teddy stared.
Then someone said, "Oh."
Neville pulled back first, knocking his elbow straight into a fallen bauble. It made a dull clink. He went red at once. "I can explain," he blurted, though no one had asked him to.
Charlie looked down at Neville, then at the room, then shrugged in a way that was far too calm for the situation. "We were testing the mistletoe theory," he said. "Very scientific."
Ginny snorted. Someone else laughed. Teddy blinked, still trying to understand what he had just interrupted.
Charlie added, "In our defence, the tree attacked us first."
Neville stared at him in disbelief. "That is not how trees work."
The cat chose that moment to leap from the wreckage and run away again, tail high, mission clearly accomplished. Teddy chased after it once more, the shock already fading.
Behind him, someone started picking up the baubles. Neville and Charlie stayed close, both bright red. They smiled at each other, then looked around, not sure where to go.
