Hugo was halfway through tearing paper when the knock came.
Charlie froze. Neville slipped up and opened the door.
The puppy burst in like a snowdrift with legs, soft brown fur, wild tail, a tiny Santa hat clenched triumphantly in its mouth. It skidded straight into Hugo and toppled over in a knot of paws and giggles.
Hugo stared at Neville. Then at Charlie. Then back at the puppy.
“For me?” he whispered, eyes wider.
Neville nodded.
Hugo dropped to the floor and gathered the warm, shaking little body to his chest. The puppy licked his chin. Hugo laughed so hard he cried.
“I’m calling him Comet,” said Hugo Weasley, into soft fur.
Charlie let out a breath he’d been holding all day. Outside, snow began to fall. Inside, nothing in the room felt bigger than that small, impossible joy.
