Prompt: Day 29: one-horse open sleigh (also [community profile] sweetandshort 10 out of 20 prompt: country)
Summary: Sherlock and John are caught in a blizzard on Christmas Eve.

“Sherlock, no boots, no jumper, no coat, no scarf, no hat in the world could save me from the misery which is trudging in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard for hours on Christmas Eve for nothing!”

“I thought you liked bucolic winter scenes, John.”

“On Christmas cards, yes! In Christmas carols, yes! The landscape may be picturesque, but I can’t see it for the blinding snow and the ten-foot drifts!”

“You protest too much, John, just listen.”

“How can I—?” But John’s rant was cut off. He did hear something.

Bells. Jingle bells.

“Am I hallucinating?”

“Happy Christmas!” cried a voice.

“Lestrade!”

John was certain he was hallucinating. From the white there appeared…

“It’s a one-horse open sleigh!” called Lestrade. “Hop in before you freeze to death.”

“No sign of Carpenter,” said Sherlock with disgust.

“Probably not, seeing as he slipped on a patch of ice and knocked himself senseless. The locals picked him up an hour ago.”

“See? It was a wild goose chase!” cried John as he settled under the blankets.

“But John…”

“Oh, very well,” said John. “Let’s go dashing through the snow and forget all about it—if I don’t lose a toe!”

Sounds completely realistic and probable to me.
Seasonal snark is good.
Love it.
