The Yuletide Feast has ended, and Headmistress McGonagall stands at the door of the Great Hall saying "Happy Christmas" to the students and staff who have remained at Hogwarts. Most are looking slightly bilious; they've over-indulged themselves, of course. But that's what holidays are for.

For some, at least. The headmistress herself has eaten moderately and taken one small slice of Christmas pudding. As her mother always said, "enough is as good as a feast."

Still, she may not be so restrained once she retreats to her private quarters for her own Christmas celebration. This tradition is new; she's established it only since the war, but it has become the high point of her holiday.

She will settle into an armchair in her sitting room, a fresh bottle of 25-year Ogden's Old at her feet, the roaring fire providing all her light.

And she will invite a select few portraits to populate their frames and keep her quiet company. Albus and Severus and Amelia Bones, come specially from the Ministry.

She will pour out her amber ambrosia and silently toast each friend. They will nod or smile. . .or scowl, and for this brief moment, Minerva will enjoy peace on earth.
