Otis noticed something was wrong the moment Herrmann appeared in the common room with a huge, plastered-on smile.

Mouch put aside his newspaper to look at the transparent-plastic covered fruitcake that Herrmann placed in front of him. “Cindy is trying some new recipes for the holidays, but she doesn’t want the kids to eat cakes all day.”

Humming, Mouch dropped his reading and took a closer look at the cake.

“Didn’t you say Cindy hates fruitcake, Herrmann?” Otis jumped.

“What?” Hermann spat in his regularly calm state. “When did I say that?”

“Last year when Lily bought an extra one, and I tried to give it to you,” he pointed out with a raised eyebrow.

“Well, yes, she hates fruitcake,” Hermmann admitted, throwing his hands into the air. “So what?”

“So why would she bake one, then?” Otis pushed.

Herrmann gave him a stinky look, which only encouraged Otis’ smirk.

Calmly, Mouch took out his glasses. Turning to Herrmann, he asked “You know I won’t judge you, but where has this cake come from?”

“Okay, smart-ass.” Herrmann rolled his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest. “Cindy’s sister Susan brought it over last week, and we all hate her baking.”
