Summary: Watson recalls a beautiful Christmas memory.
I will always remember the Christmas I spent with my friend Colonel Hayter. It was after Mary’s death and before Holmes’ return. Hayter and I had passed a quiet week together, but on Christmas Eve, we paid a visit to his neighbouring family. I remember being surprised at vicarious thrills watching the children open their gifts.
I remember one girl’s face elated with her new doll. She held it up and then began to waltz with it. Just then, it began to snow again, and it seemed the girl, the doll, and Nature herself were all at the winter ball.
