for table’s joy, for time of year, for recipes passed down
raisins studded recklessly, with festive glee, gluts of nuts,
under wraps until required, uncovered, then wrapped anew
in parchment sleeves, in paper fine, in ribbon and in twine
to custom carry, to ferry, the gift of time well spent
currants and sultanas, the scent of spirit and of spice
a habit, a delight, a candied, brandied Yuletide rite
keeping warmth aglow in hearts and hearths, sweetness on the tongue
each greeting caroling on in the manner it’s begun
since it’s time, hark the glorious golden chime, it’s fruitcake time!
