Just a few years ago, Penny could not have foreseen this moment ever happening in her life. She's leaning against a complete nerd but a true friend, both of them playing with holiday sparklers and giggling like little girls. She's helped this girl come out of her shell, find and woo the love (no matter how questionable a choice) of her life, upgrade her wardrobe (which was a given for any friend, of course, and always had been), and actually find a life. And Penny herself had also found a life.
A real life. A genuine life filled with genuine friends and genuine love. There was nothing make believe here. All their relationships were true, and they were all brutally honest with each other. Their men were dressed as the complete dorks they were, having opted to ring in the new year in ridiculous costumes. Bernadette was trying to supervise her kids in playing with sparklers for the first time. They, too, were dressed in costume, but at least they were kids. It was no longer a strange thing to see a child in a costume beyond a play or Halloween. They were kids; they were supposed to have fun.
But she was also having loads of fun, and it had nothing to do with sex and very little to do with alcohol. Amy hiccupped and elbowed her gently in her ribs. She gestured at their men, who were still talking after finishing their first game of the new year with their friends. She pointed at Sheldon in particular and giggled again, drawing a heart in the air with her sparkler.
Penny smiled, let herself giggle, and managed to stop from beginning what experience had long ago taught her would be a whole string of hiccups once started. She could hold her liquor better than anyone else here, but she didn't want to disrupt the night's happy flow with revealing just how plastered she was. Even so at least she was still conscious at this early hour of the morning of the first day of the year, something she hadn't been for years before meeting this group, before meeting... her real family, she supposed, thinking of some lines in the play she was currently running on Broadway.
These people loved her and accepted her more than anybody else ever had in her life before, including her own family. Especially her own father, whose approval, she suddenly realized, she no longer needed. Not with friends like these. She giggled, and this time, she did hiccup. She tottered a little as she leaned against Amy, and Amy turned quickly, subtly, catching her and keeping her standing.
From across the room, Leonard looked at his wife and beamed joyfully, proudly, happily, and with love shining over every bit of his countenance. He put down his own cup and crossed the room to reach her. Penny hiccupped again and drew a heart with her own sparkler in the air. "Hey, gorgeous, how're you feeling?" He smiled.
She hiccupped and admitted, blushing with what she would have blamed on the weather flushing her cheeks, "Happy."
"I'm glad," Leonard said and watched as she drew another heart with a sparkler. "I'm happy too," he said, "and I think we'll get happier still when we get home."
"Home," she said, hiccupping again and drawing another heart.
He reached around her and kissed her cheek. He was so gentle, so timid, so unlike any man she had ever dated before, so sweet, so... nice. He was awesome, and she was lucky to have him. "So what do we say," he asked gently as she started giggling between her hiccups and waving her sparkler more sporadically in the air, "can I get lucky and take the Prom Queen home?"
"Only if I get lucky and take the Nerd King home." Leonard instinctively closed his eyes as Penny almost tapped him on his nose with her sparkler. She stopped just short of actually doing so not because she realized that its hot tip would burn and hurt him but because she missed.
"Hey!" Sheldon protested from across the room.
"Hey!" Amy wavered as she started to walk toward her own husband. She pointed her sparkler at him. "You're my -- *hic* -- Nerd King! I'm no Prom Queen," she admitted.
"No, you're the Nerd Queen, and you're an awesome Nerd Queen and an awesome friend and -- " Penny's sparkler had gone out, and she leaned suddenly too far to one side as she tried to make another symbol in the air with it, the sign of friendship.
"All right, my Queen," Leonard said, swiftly catching her. "I can't carry you home, but let's get you home."
"I am home."
"Yes, you are." Holding her close, he kissed her temple. "But let's get you to our home. I want to ring in the new year right."
"We have," she said, grinning at him. Complete joy shone brightly in her lovely eyes. "We have rang it in better than ever before, and this year is going to be the best yet!" She tried to lean toward him and fell across him instead.
Raj and Howard exchanged a look. Bernadette glared at them. They moved together, without an actual word spoken, to assist Leonard in walking his wife out of the apartment, down the steps, and into their car. When he finally got her home and to their bed, she was singing, "We wish you a merry Christmas! We wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!" This time, she did tap his nose with her dead sparkler.
Leonard grinned widely. "It's going to be the best year," he agreed, "because I still have you in my life."
"You're never getting rid of me, Nerd King, not again, not ever." He blew at the sparkler. She dropped it and wrapped her arms around him, pulling him down on top of her in the bed.
He wrapped himself warmly around her. "I never want to, my Queen," he spoke truthfully, jubilantly, and began covering the Queen to which he had years before pledged his allegiance forever more with kisses.
