It was too cold to be out here. Especially at night.

Ric shoved his hands into his pockets, doing his best not to be too obvious about the shivering. Lorna had persuaded him to come and check out the local Christmas Market.

"We can stay at home and watch holiday movies anytime. Heck, we could even watch them in the summer, if we felt like it," she'd told him. "Can we go? Please?"

She'd batted those lovely eyes of hers, and Ric had caved. Now, Lorna's arm tucked in one of his, he walked along with her, taking in the sights.

Okay. Despite how cold he was feeling, he had to admit that it was pretty nice. Lights, both white and multicolored, twinkled everywhere, setting trees and shrubbery alight with a beautiful glow. Vendors had stalls scattered about the plaza, and a temporary bandstand had been set up. On it, dancers moved in time to Christmas-music-performing singers.

For a moment, Ric felt himself drawn to one of the stalls. A man wearing a tacky, but oddly charming, reindeer sweater was selling small figurines.

He held one out, noticing Ric's interest. "Hand-carved," he said with a smile.

Taking it, Ric examined it thoroughly. He grinned; the little figure was a dead ringer for Lorna. She'd probably get a kick out of seeing it peering out of her stocking.

"How much," he asked.

"Five dollars."

"I'll take it." He fumbled in a pocket for his wallet, handing over a five-dollar bill. Taking the figure back, the man wrapped it in emerald-green tissue, taping the paper into place. Ric pocketed the little parcel carefully. "Thanks; happy holidays."

"The same to you," the vendor responded, waving him along.

That little bit of business settled, Ric looked around. Where had Lorna wandered off to while he was occupied?

"Over here," he heard her calling. Lorna raced up to him, a tote bag on one arm. In both of her hands were waxed-paper cups. "I found a woman who was selling hot chocolate, and I thought you might like some. Oh! Before I forget," she added, shoving both cups into Ric's hands. She reached into the tote, pulling out a long, long, long scarf. "I got this, too!"

Ric laughed, taking in the lengths of yarn. "What're you gonna do with a scarf that long? You've only got one neck!"

"I'm going to do this with it. I'm not the only one around here with a neck, ya know!"

Deftly, Lorna wrapped a couple of lengths of the scarf around her neck. Then, to Ric's surprise, she wound a few yards of it around Ric's, leaving the remaining lengths for them to both move about without running the risk of hurting or otherwise inconveniencing each other.

"Okay," Ric chuckled, nodding, as Lorna took one of the cups of cocoa back. "Guess that answers that question."

"Here's another one, then," she responded, eyes twinkling. "Are you glad you came along?"

Pausing to take a quick sip of his hot chocolate, Ric wrapped his other arm around Lorna's shoulders, holding her close. "I'm beginning to be."
