She stares, rapt, at the stage. It's her first trip to a major city; as a little child, coming from a tiny town of only a few hundred people, this place has already amazed her. But here, in the opera house, her imagination and heart are soaring.
She's never been to a ballet production before. Has only ever seen it on television. Even then, though, it was instant love.
Now, seeing a live performance of The Nutcracker, she feels like she's in Heaven.
After the performance, trying to fall asleep, she clutches a small nutcracker. Her mother bought it for her at the opera house's gift shop. It's tiny, just like her, and painted red, with rabbit's-fur beard and hair.
Stroking the nutcracker's hair, the wonders she's seen still dancing in her eyes, she makes a heartfelt wish.
I want to be a ballerina when I grow up.
