She's missed her parents every year, and Nani has had to force herself to celebrate the turning of the calendar page. She's had to force herself to come dragging out of bed every morning, to make breakfast and wrap gifts, and most of all, for her little sister's sake, she's had to make herself appear to be happy. It's hard enough for her, going through the holidays without her parents, but she's no longer a child. She hasn't been for years.

Lilo is. Lilo needs her parents, and she needs Christmas. She needs Nani to keep herself together, and to pretend to be happy, to be everybody's rock even when she's falling completely apart inside. So, every year, Nani has dutifully celebrated the holidays for her sister just as she has made it through every trying day for her sister.

But not this year.

This year, she realizes, watching Lilo, Jumba, Bleakley, and Stitch play in the unusual snow falling on their Hawaiian shore, Nani actually feels warm. She knows exactly why that is and beams openly as his arms come sneaking around her middle again. David holds her close, hugging her gently, cherishing her. He has become her rock, and somehow, along the way of making sure Lilo and their new alien family members have stayed all right throughout all the chaotic dangers from outer space and their own homeworld, Nani has actually began to heal instead of just focusing on helping others heal.

Now her smile is genuine, her laughter no longer fake, and there are finally, finally no tears. Her whole countenance is shining as her boyfriend spins her around to Elvis' Winter Wonderland. She doesn't feel the pang she used to feel when she hears Stitch calling out about his ohana. She misses her parents -- she always will --, but her family is here. And as crazy as it seems, that includes the three aliens.

"You're happy?" David asks softly, watching her with his deep, soft eyes.

"Oh, yes!" Nani cries jubilantly. She clasps her hands on either side of his handsome face and kisses him deeply. "I'm happy. I love you!"

She hears fireworks begin to explode and turns to face them. His arms are still wrapped around her, but he steps closer still. "I'm happy," he whispers, kissing her ear, "you're happy."

She has her family back, even if it's far from any idea she'd had before meeting Stitch of family. She has David, and she has Lilo. She not only loves but actually feels loved now. She'd never thought she'd have a happy Christmas again, but it truly is a wonderful celebration this year!
