The Night Before Cave Christmas

“What is it?” she asked with apprehension.

The other girl rolled her eyes and sighed.
“It’s an egg,” she said, the sharpness of her Galarian accent so familiar now. “What does it look like?”

“No, I mean, I know it’s an egg,” Lillie countered defensively, “I just meant, you know, what’s inside it?”

A mischievous look flashed across Selene’s face.

That’s the point of the thing, not to know,” she said, her voice lilting as she all but sang the reply.

Fastidious, troubled by the lack of directness in the other girl’s replies, Lillie frowned, her eyebrows meeting in the middle, the egg with its fragile shell, its decorative pattern of green smudges, still held in her grasp.

“W-What am I supposed to do with it?” Lillie asked cautiously.

Selene shrugged.

“Be surprised, I guess? I hadn’t really thought that far ahead.”

Lillie glanced at her ruefully, wanting to say something more, wanting to criticise her carelessness, trying to reconcile the casual manner in which she carried herself with that recollection of the almost-end-of-the-world, Selene and her trembling litten, the dust and the sand around them, the skies dark with the shape of the crystalline Ultra Beast above.

“Look,” Selene said, obviously frustrated by Lillie’s pragmatism, “if you don’t like it, I can take it back.”

“I’m not saying I don’t like it,” Lillie said, examining the egg. “Where did you get it from anyway?”

“Mail order,” Selene admitted sheepishly.

She looked up from the egg, raising her eyebrows.

“Mail order?”

“Aye,” Selene murmured. “Well, I thought you liked these little mysteries. After all, that’s how we meet, isn’t it? When you were hotfooting it around with Nebby.”

“I’ve never ‘hotfooted’ it around anywhere,” Lillie protested, still bewildered by the other girl’s occasional turn of phrase.

“You know what I mean,” Selene muttered.

Abruptly, the egg trembled in Lillie’s hands, and she looked sharply down at it.

“Was that—?”

“Yes,” Lillie said quickly, cutting her off.

Selene smirked.

“Ah, Lillie, you’re going to be a mother.”

“Don’t say that!”

Without warning the shell broke open in her hands, a hefty dinosaur baby blinking its way into the light, dark eyes struggling to focus in the artificial light of Lillie’s bedroom. Slowly, the beast turned its head to look up at her, and nervously Lillie looked back, holding it away at arm’s length.

Yoshi!” the creature bleated.

Anxiously, Lillie and Selene exchanged bewildered looks.
