Song of Avallion

The whole idea was as facetious as a meeting with Father Christmas. No, she thought, it was worse than that, it was like a zoom call with Father Christmas, so ridiculous was the notion. She was not one to entertain such foolishness, in fact, for all that could be said, Major General Winifred Bambera was not one who could be said to entertain frivolity—and yet this Sword of Logos business irritated her, all this hole-in-the-sky, knights fighting for the future of the Earth business. She had experienced quite enough of that 25 years ago, what with that business Ancelyn and the Doctor, and all those other bloody knights marching about Carbury.

Now, here she was trying to ascertain the legitimacy of an organisation well outside of her jurisdiction and claiming to be older than recorded history and policed by boys in armour. Just as she had got Ancelyn housetrained, she thought to herself.

“You realise this is highly irregular?” she asked of the woman standing before her, her smart business suit, her scowling expression, and arms folded across her chest.

“I realise, yes,” Shindai Reika answered.

Petulant child, Bambera thought with displeasure. The girl deserves a spanking. She threw the file down on her desk, and leant back in her chair.

“Then you’ll understand why I can’t help you.”

A moment of emotion flashed across the younger woman’s face. She opened her mouth, but Bambera swiftly cut her off.

“He’s not a dog. We can’t just whistle and he’ll come running, that’s not how it works. When he turns up, he turns up, and usually we just have to accommodate him. We can’t just call him and ask him to solve our problems for us.”

The emotion calcified on the other woman’s face into something more recognisable as anger. She reached down and snatched the file from Bambera’s desk.

“Then we have nothing further to discuss.”

“No,” Bambera said coldly, “I don’t believe we do.”

Without a further word, Shindai turned upon the heel of her Chelsea boots and marched from the office. Whoever these Sword of Logos people were, Bambera thought, they certainly had their work cut out for them.
