Dilapidated Town
“A sled?” she asked, arching an eyebrow.
“A toboggan,” Axel said, hefting the weight of it up in his hands.
Adam shrugged, looking away, the flickering lights of the empty bar above them, the splintered furniture and littered bodies sprawled out across the floor below.
“Hey, I don’t care either way, just as long as we get moving.”
Blaze sighed, placing thumb and forefinger upon the bridge of her nose.
“Remember when we were actually on the force and had a budget for something more than a sled?”
“Toboggan,” Axel insisted once more, his voice gruff, a frown forming on his face.
“We’ve still got contacts on the force,” Adam reminded her, “they’ll help us out if we get in a pinch.”
Blaze shook her head.
“The police don’t turn up at the push of a button, Adam, you know that as well I do.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Axel insisted, “we have a toboggan now.”
“And what are you going to do with that thing? Just slide on into Mr X’s office?”
She turned to look at him, and realised from his expression, that, yes, that was exactly what he had been planning.
“Oh, Jesus,” she murmured, shaking her head.
“Whatever,” he growled, tossing the toboggan away, the weighty sound of it clattering against the ground, the groan as it bounced off the body of a wounded grunt. “I guess we’ll just do things the old-fashioned way.”
He cracked his knuckles, squared his shoulders, and marched forward towards the doorframe, the door hanging off at an angle from where they had kicked it in.
Blaze caught Adam’s eye, and again, shook her head.
“A sled?” she mouthed.
He laughed, and shrugged.
“I know, right.”
