Office Party
“It’s punch,” she said, watching him, noting his weary expression, his unwillingness to accept the proffered cup. She rolled her eyes. “Come on, Mulder, it’s not that bad, try something new.”
They had known each other but a handful of months, their first meeting being her unwelcome assignment as his partner, the role sold to her as a gentle way of perhaps bringing him back into the fold, and yet, in that time, a genuine fondness for one another, a genuine respect had grown up between them.
Gingerly, he reached out and took the plastic cup from her, the sound of voices around them, small talk, water cooler chat, the occasional tipsy giggle, and the grating noise of some Christmas number one he dimly remembered from adolescence being pipped through the PA system.
“I don’t know, Scully,” he remarked looking down at the dark liquid within, the slice of lime bobbing on the surface, “I’m not especially fond of trying new things."
“Think of it as a learning exercise,” she said teasingly.
Again, she thought of that suggestion that somehow, she might bring him back, straighten him out, and she thought that such seemed a disservice to him, that he was already doing all right by himself, his lack of willingness to try new things notwithstanding.
Smiling to herself, Dana Scully raised her own plastic cup.
“Drink up, Mulder,” she smiled, “this is the only time of year we get paid to do this.”
Reluctantly, Fox Mulder lifted the cup to his lips.
