Three Masks
There was silence between them, the only sound being the lurch of broken machinery, failing computers, and the roar from above, the dreadful echo of monstrous footsteps and falling masonry.
She turned her head, the bruise on her right cheek darkening slowly over time, the taste of blood upon her tongue, welling up behind her teeth. Despite the pain that wracked her body, still Oharu Sayo searched for some means to escape.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
Slowly, she turned back to where the other woman stood before her, the dim artificial light of Kusaka’s basement laboratory casting her shadow long upon the ground—so long, Sayo thought, that it engulfed her, its shape swallowing her up, drowning her in darkness.
“We’re not defeated yet,” she said, trying to keep her voice level, trying to keep the pain and fear out of the words she spoke.
Ahead of her, Yodonna tilted her head, regarding the other woman with undisguised curiosity.
“We?” she repeated.
Sayo swallowed, nodding her head slowly, regretting it as a thrill of pain ran through her once more. She thought once more of her teammates—of Sena, of Tame, of Juuru, and Takamichi—she thought of the impossible odds they faced, the three beasts with the swollen forms of their grotesque masks, the endless soldiers of Yodon, their features likewise carved in identical likenesses.
“We,” she said, her voice soft, calm, yet full of belief.
Before her, the priestess of the raven offering, her foul crop in hand, sneered with disbelief, but it didn’t matter; they would come for her, and against all odds, they would triumph. This was what it meant to be a hero, she told herself; this was what it meant to be a Kiramager.
