"Oof!"
Something large collided with Lana's legs, sending her tumbling. A cluster of shopping bags skittered out of her grasp, littering the sidewalk, which was chilled by an early December cold snap. Sitting up, she looked around--
--and found a giant white cloud with a wet, shiny nose staring at her. Its owner leaned in close, snuffling at her face, before coating it in licks.
"Whoa, there," Lana laughed, pulling herself away from the enthusiastic dog. "Hello to you, too!"
"Oh, geez!" A man jogged over, helping Lana upright and gathering her bags for her. "I'm really sorry about this. He didn't hurt you, did he?"
She smiled, waving away the troubled look in his eyes. "I'm fine. I just hope I didn't hurt the dog. Is he yours," she asked, taking her bags back. "Thanks, by the way."
"You're welcome. And, yeah." The man unclipped the cloud-dog's leash from a nearby rail that bordered an outdoor café. "This is my big lug," he smiled. "I just got him a few hours ago. Sorry again; Tinsel doesn't seem to know his own strength."
Tilting her head, Lana gazed between the dog and its owner. "You named him Tinsel?"
"It seemed kinda appropriate, what with Christmas coming," he explained with a slight shrug. Then, his face crinkled worriedly. "Too corny?"
"Are you kidding?! I think that's adorable!" Lana leaned down, ruffling the dog's ears. "As adorable as he is. Aren't you, Tinsel?"
Yapping with delight, Tinsel tried to hop into her arms.
"Easy, there, big guy," his owner laughed, trying to guide him away. "I think he likes you."
"And we haven't even been properly introduced," Lana said, pretending to scold the dog. "I'm Lana, just so both of you know."
"I'm James."
"Bond," she teasingly asked.
James' eyes twinkled mischievously. "If I said yes, would you believe me?"
"No."
"Good. 'Cuz I'd be lying."
At that, they both laughed. That seemed only to heighten Tinsel's enthusiasm. He started to bark excitedly, bounding back and forth between the two humans.
"So, uh, since my dog seems to like you so much, maybe we can get some coffee," James suggested, nodding toward the café. "I've never taken advice from a canine before, but he appears to be hinting."
"Oh, you should always take advice from canines," Lana assured him, adopting a mock-serious tone. "They're wiser than we are."
"Tinsel sure seems to be," James agreed, holding the café door open for her and Tinsel. "Luckily, Tinsel apparently knows this place is dog-friendly."
