Given how long the Doctor has traveled in both Space and Time, he's learned to accept every waking moment as the potential dawning of a New Year. Any second has the potential for a fresh start, a new broom sweeping clean the past, and leading on to the future. Because, no matter how far back into the past he goes, it's still the future to someone out there.
After all the losses that he's acquired over the ages, however, those fresh starts seem harder and harder to come by. It's difficult to appreciate what's standing before you, when every moment could steal it all away again. He tries, nevertheless, to maintain an eternal optimism.
Since meeting River, knowing what her end will be, that necessity has become all the more important. He resolves to never, ever take her for granted.
