Title: 'Nothing Wrong With Wishing'
Fandom: The Monkees
Characters: Peter Tork, Original Character
Rating: G
Notes: Inspired in part by the song, 'My Grown-Up Christmas List'.

It was the middle of a late-December evening, and Peter was just finishing up his last-minute holiday shopping for his bandmates. Satisfied that he'd covered his list well, he headed for the doors of the department store, eager to get home and start wrapping.

A jingling sound caught his attention, and he turned. There, he spotted a man dressed as Santa Claus, sitting amid a miniature Christmas village. A few children were just leaving the line, sucking on candy canes, content at the thought that their wishes would be granted that holiday.

An impulse sent Peter into what was left of the line, just as the last of the children left. He wasn't surprised at the perplexed expression on the shop Santa's face.

"Hello, young man," the would-be Santa began. He looked around, his confusion clearly growing. "I don't see anybody with you."

Peter smiled a bit. "No; it's just me."

"Well...this is somewhat unorthodox; Santa Claus is for the kiddies, after all."

"I know. It's just that...adults have wishes, too."

The Santa-suited gentleman nodded. "Yes; that's true. Very well. What might I do for you this Christmas? What are you wishing for?"

"Peace," Peter quietly stated.

That look of perplexity became even more pronounced. "I'm afraid I don't follow you. If you could elaborate on that, please?"

"Alright. My wish is for peace. For people to care about each other, to treat each other with the compassion and respect that all of us deserve. For people to be kind, to embrace simple love for their fellow man." Feeling that the explanation was somehow inadequate, Peter gave a half-embarrassed shrug. "That's it," he murmured.

The man in the Santa suit scratched his head. "Good heavens. That's quite a tall order, my friend. I'm not sure that it's anything that one man in a sleigh can help you with."

"I know." Peter grinned sadly. "But there's nothing wrong with wishing."
