'Candy Cane Lane'
Winter's chill has claimed the air, turning your every exhaled breath into a cloud of condensation that floats before you as you walk. The sun set some time ago, but you're not the only person drawn out of your house tonight.
The neighborhood has opened itself up for the holidays, side streets barricaded so that everyone can walk at their leisure and enjoy the evening. At either side of you, houses are aglow with twinkling lights in every color, bright enough to almost pass for day. Stereo systems are piping out Christmas carols, and you feel a spring in your step that brings a smile to your face.
Residents of some of the houses mingle with the passersby, offering mugs of hot cocoa and eggnog, or bites of freshly made fudge. You take a chunk, and are quickly lost in bliss as it melts in your mouth. Someone in an elf costume, unembarrassed by how silly they look, presses a candy cane into your hand as they pass by, waving cheerily at you as they get lost in the crowd.
Everyone is so happy, their enthusiasm infectious. Friends and strangers alike are sharing in the festivities, all acting like one huge family.
Huddling more snugly in your mittens and coat and scarf, you smile to yourself, wishing that tonight would last forever.
