Ginny came home with snow in her hair and cold on her cheeks. Luna was already on the floor, laughing softly.
Between them sat a tiny kitten and a clumsy puppy. Both wore red Santa hats that slid over their eyes.
“They hate this,” Ginny said, smiling anyway.
“I think they feel important,” Luna replied.
The puppy wagged so hard it fell over. The kitten pounced on the loose pom-pom.
Ginny knelt down. The puppy climbed into her lap. The kitten chose Luna.
The fire crackled. Outside, it snowed.
“This is perfect,” Ginny said.
Luna leaned over and kissed her.
The animals slept. The hats stayed on.
