"Wow!"

Curious as to the source of Kagome's enthusiastic outcry, Inuyasha was surprised to find her staring in amazement at a black pine.

"Uh, Kagome, why are you starin' at a tree," he asked, confused. "It's not the first one you've ever seen."

Blushing, Kagome rubbed her hands together, then pointed at one of the limbs. "I'm not looking at the tree. I'm looking at the mistletoe."

Inuyasha looked up, noticing several sprigs clinging to the branches. "So, what's the big deal? Why're you so interested in that stuff?"

"It's just that I've never seen so much of it in one place before."

"What? They don't have mistletoe in your era?"

"Of course they do," Kagome snapped. "Otherwise, why would I know what it is, in the first place?!"

"Okay, okay!" Raising his hands, Inuyasha backed off. "I just don't get why a plant's suddenly so important to you; that's all."

"It's not! It's just that..." Sighing, Kagome shook her head. "Never mind. I don't know how to explain it all. In my time, mistletoe has some traditions attached to it that haven't caught on here yet, in this time. It wouldn't make sense to you if I told you about it, so let's just forget it."

Inuyasha let out a chuckle. "I don't have enough hands to count all the things about your era that don't make sense to me, Kagome. Doesn't mean you can't tell me about 'em. So go ahead; I'm listenin'."

Kagome took a breath. "Alright. In my era, and in other countries in this era, people kiss underneath sprigs of mistletoe."

He tilted his head. "Really," he asked, glancing at a sprig that hung just above Kagome's head. "Why's that?"

"It's..." Kagome shrugged. This was getting embarrassing; if only Inuyasha had agreed to let the subject drop! "Sort of for good luck, falling in love, things like that."

"Huh." Inuyasha rubbed the back of his neck, watching as Kagome blushed. She had no idea how cute she was when she did that. Almost irresistible. He smiled a little. "Well, as long as it's for good luck..."

Leaning in, he tried to give Kagome a quick peck on the cheek. Surprised at his sudden movement, Kagome turned--their lips colliding unexpectedly. For a moment, they both stiffened, trying to grasp what was happening. Then, almost as if in silent agreement, they gave in to it, a would-be peck turning into a sweeter, more tender kiss with a touch of sincerity behind it. Though it only lasted seconds, it felt like a miniature eternity passing between the two.

When the kiss ended, Kagome felt her knees go weak, and she leaned against the pine tree's trunk for support. To her stunned amusement, Inuyasha's cheeks were a bright pink. She giggled a little, breaking him out of an apparent reverie.

"That...probably wasn't supposed to happen," Inuyasha mumbled. Then, he frowned pensively. "I sure hope Miroku doesn't know about this mistletoe tradition. There'd be no stoppin' him."

Kagome laughed nervously. "Then we'd better not say anything to him about it!"
