"How long has she been in zere?" Kurt whispered to Kitty, the tip of his blue tail twitching.
Katheryne shrugged her shoulders in answer. "I don't know," she replied truthfully, scratching Lockheed's head. The dragon curled more tightly, and reassuringly, around her neck, making a soft cooing sound that they all three knew was his version of purring. "Things didn't go well yesterday with her mother, did they?"
"Do zey ever vith Margali? Amanda is a beautiful voman, a strong voman, but ve all long for our mothers to care for us. I have just ze zing though." He bamfed out of the control room, leaving Kitty to wave the stench of brimestone away from her and Lockheed and down into the training area where Amanda had actually been since last night.
Her eyes were red with deep bags lining underneath them. Her body was covered with the dirt from the previous night's trying, and ultimately failing, mission and sweat from the nonstop hours she'd been spending perfecting her gymnastics through the blasts of Sentinels and attacks from other creatures, both imagined and real. Of course, some of the creatures she fought that to most would have appeared only imaginary Kurt, Kitty, and she knew were actually real. They had all endured Limbo before. They knew that Demons truly existed, and they knew real evil, sometimes in the forms of those they loved the most, did indeed walk the Earth.
Amanda squealed when Kurt suddenly appeared in front of her. Her fingers left the trapeze bar, but Kurt grabbed her before she could fall and flipped her over his head. He somersaulted with her and caught them both on the bars. His tail wrapped around them both, a sprig of mistletoe held in its blue tip.
"Du frecher Dämon!" Amanda exclaimed, but her tone was teasing and there was a light at last shining through the tears in her wet, blue eyes. She playfully shoved Kurt's shoulder. He wrapped his tail and arms around her slender body and held her closer, held her comfortingly yet tightly as he had done when they had been so very much younger and just beginning to learn of Margali's evil ways.
"Sh. 'Tis Christmas, Amanda. Spend it vith me, not in ze past." Holding the mistletoe above their heads, he kissed her long and deep.
Above, Kitty decided it was time to call Ororo.
