La Fée-Dragée et le Prince Orgeat

Her porcelain skin, her cinnamon lips; she would never change, never grow old, a dusting of fairy dust upon her the pale flesh of her shoulders glistening like glitter in the bright light of her workshop. A smile touched her lips as she regarded her, and she reached up to wipe her brow with the back of her hand, leaving an ashen smudge of coal upon her forehead.

“Yes,” she said at last, looking again at that shape of her, taking a step to the side to regard her, beaming with delight as the woman’s eyes followed her movements.

“Yes,” Maire Stahlbaum said again, completing a full circle, and standing once more before her, dressed in her dusty boiler suit, whilst she stood before, resplendent in her silken ruffles and satin bodice. “Oh, yes, you are perfect indeed.”

At once, the other woman’s face came to life, her features suddenly full of excitement and animation, her lips curling in a broad smile.

“Oh, do you think so?” she asked, her voice lilting and playful.

“Yes, oh, yes!” Marie said, reaching out and taking hold of her cold hands, looking upon the woman she had fashioned with love and adoration. “Yes, you’re perfect, Sugar Plum, absolutely perfect.”

Within her dark eyes, something glittered, something hard, something dangerous.

“I’m so pleased to hear you say that,” she said, moments old and already aware of herself, her creator’s warm hands holding her own, “because, you see, dear heart, I think so too.”

She tittered with amusement, pleased with herself for being so wise, so witty despite the brevity of the moments in which she had existed.

“Oh, Sugar Plum, we’re going to be the best of friends,” Marie said, holding onto her hands. “Nothing shall ever come between us now.”

The smile upon the other’s lips did not falter.

“Of course not,” she answered her creator. “Why, I would never allow that.”

Again, she tittered, yet within those dark eyes, there was no mirth.
