"It can be difficult to get people to come in and get their flu shots," Eden was explaining to me. She nodded toward the waiting area. "That's where he comes in."

A nurse went to the door separating the waiting room from our station. "Saint Nick," he called.

"Present!" Up popped the man Eden had referred to. He was jolly and plump, with a white, snowy beard that contrasted with his bright red suit. "Time to get my flu shot," he cheerily announced, marching to the door. "Can't get it at the North Pole."

He turned and winked at a child who was sitting nearby, waiting for a checkup. In response, the child's eyes went round as saucers.

"Mama, mama," the little child hissed, tugging at his mother's sleeve. "Did you see that? Santa's getting a flu shot!"

Back in our station, Eden let out a soft giggle. "It gets the kids every time," she told me.

I shook my head, smiling. "Talk about ingenious! What a wonderful trick. And it brings people in?"

She nodded. "It really has helped. The kids pester their parents, grandparents, or whoever their guardians might be. We bring in Santas from different stores, but we make sure to stagger them whenever we can, so the children don't get confused."

"Good move," I agreed. "Whatever helps people stay healthy during flu season."

"Bingo."
