"I invented gingerbread," the Doctor confidently stated, taking up a forkful and examining it with some satisfaction. Then he blinked, perplexed, at the laughter the claim received. "What?"

"You did not," River smirked. "I could prove it--"

"But the holidays aren't about you proving that you're an archaeology geek, which we're all keenly aware of; so please control yourself," he grumbled.

Amy snickered, licking a dollop of whipped cream off of her thumb. She exchanged knowing smiles with Rory, before diving in. "Go ahead and burst his bubble, River; tell us the true story of the Doctor and the gingerbread."

Her daughter grinned widely, making herself more comfortable. "I'd love to. Once upon a time, there was a man called The Doctor, who was ever so clever. But he liked to pretend that he was even more clever than he was. So he made up all sorts of nonsense to impress his friends, including one about how he'd had the wisdom to invent something as delicious as gingerbread. But the cheeky boy forgot that he'd married an archaeologist who didn't mind setting the record straight every time she felt the need to--"

The Doctor sighed with a chagrinned smile. "I've heard it told slightly differently," he told her.

She winked. "Then I'd love to hear how your version goes, sweetie."

"Very well. As long as we're telling tales. Once, there was a devil of a woman who called herself River Song. She enjoyed being a horrendous tease every chance she got."

"Okay. I'm pretty much hearing the same story twice," Rory laughed, taking a bite of his gingerbread slice.
