(UNTANGLING CHRISTMAS LIGHTS)

Neville sat on the living room rug with a large box of tangled lights. He was over seventy now, and Charlie was a bit older still, but somehow the lights looked older than both of them.

Charlie lowered himself onto the floor with a slight groan. "We should have used magic," he said.

"We promised we would not," Neville replied. "It is more fun this way."

Charlie lifted one knot of green wire. "This is fun?"

Neville smiled. "It will be, when we finish."

They both leaned close to the mess. Neville tried to pull one strand free, but it caught on three others. Charlie tugged a different piece and made it worse.

"Stop," Neville said. "You are making a new knot."

"I am not," Charlie said. "The knot was already there."

Neville gave him a look he had used for years. Charlie laughed softly and handed him the wires.

They worked in slow silence for a while. Their hands were slower now, their knees stiff, but they did not mind. Outside, snow touched the window. Inside, the house smelled of pine and old wooden floors.

"Remember our first tree?" Charlie asked.

Neville nodded. "We argued about tinsel for an hour."

"We still argue about tinsel."

Neville freed a loop of lights and held it up. "One part done."

Charlie grinned. "See. This is why I love you. You always think we can fix anything."

Neville looked at the lights, not at Charlie. "Maybe we can."

Bit by bit, the knots loosened. The lights finally lay in one long line across the rug, glowing softly even before they plugged them in. Both men sat back, tired but pleased.

"Not bad for two old wizards with no magic," Charlie said.

Neville smiled. "Not bad at all."
