Warriors of Gold and Silver

The armour was cold at first, and then later it burnt, the weapons of every woman of her tribe melted down to forge its radiant aspect, that golden defence. She had never stopped to ask how it had been reclaimed from the shore, had never stopped to ask what had become of Asteria, the most hallowed of their heroes, it was enough to know that it had been entrusted to her, and to her alone. Beneath the illumination of the metal, she wore a suit of tanned hide to protect herself from the rubbing of the metal, a practical garment unlike the things of satin and cotton she had become accustomed to wearing in the world of men; a reminder that this world, for all its charms, was not hers, that the expectations of women in this place were very different from those of her own people.

Carefully, Diana Prince braced herself, crossing her arms before her as the sword clattered against her armour and rebounded, hanging in the air before her, wielded by none, possessed of its own intuition.

She straightened her back, feeling the weight of the armour as she moved, the sword making no further attempt to attack, as if somehow it sensed that her intent was not evil.

“And just what are you?” she asked of the haunted blade.

‘I am the sword that protects the world,’ a voice resounded from beyond, perhaps the voice of the sword’s owner, perhaps the voice of the blade itself. ‘The sword glittering with the power of gold and silver! Saikou!’

“Gold?” she repeated, raising an eyebrow. “It appears we have something in common then.”

There was a moment of hesitation, and then the enchanted sword seemed to dissipate, to break apart in a thousand shards of light, reforming into the likeness of a man, tall, shrouded in a grey cloak. She had seen such enchantments before, she knew this to be the work of the gods. Hermes, she reminded herself, was wildly worshipped on this isle, their ravens forever at their side, riding crop in hand.

“You are not the one I have been waiting for,” the stranger announced.

Her lips parted, and she made to question him further, to ask exactly who he was expecting, yet in a single gesture, he pulled the cloak up around him and faded from sight, the mist slowly withdrawing, a shimmer of sunlight upon the patch of grass where he had previously stood.

Beyond, still adorned in her armour, still feeling the constraints of the leather beneath the gold, Diana Prince could smell the rich, sweet scent of apple groves.
