Couldn’t keep it in, Heaven knows I’ve tried
Oh, this was just perfect, she thought, bitterly resenting the situation. Here she was looking forward to spending some qu-al-ity time with Darien, and now this little pink-haired brat was in the way. Really, thought Bunny, this little kid might have fooled the rest of her family, but she hadn’t fallen for it, not for a second, nuh-uh, and not just because of Luna’s magic, but because whatever people thought of her, she was smart enough not to fall for such a dupe.
Time travel, she thought, folding her arms across her chest, the brat sitting in-between her and Darien, curled up as close as she could get to him. Time travel and little girls from the future, what nonsense! It was clear that Rini was just a delinquent trying to hog Darien’s time and steal him away from her, and it absolutely wasn’t fair that she was stuck babysitting the brat over Christmas, because wasn’t Christmas for couples, after all?
She fidgeted, unfolded her arms, scowling at the television set, watching the old movie play out, something black and white and syrupy sweet. It wasn’t fair, she thought again, feeling bitterly hard done by.
In the corner of the room, Luna twitched in her sleep, a gesture that surprised her every time she caught it for the very cat-like nature of it. Somehow, she was always surprised when Luna revealed herself to be, despite everything, a cat, and then she wondered, in a manner that startled even her, if Luna could simultaneously be two things at once—cat and guardian—then could not Rini be more multifaceted than she had previously expected? What if there was more to being a little girl than Bunny thought, what if she had forgotten something; what if, in inheriting the power of the Silver Crystal, she had somehow grown up too quickly?
With surprise, she felt a hand in her lap, Rini’s small fingers searching out her own. She looked down, and whilst the brat still remained latched onto Darien, she realised she had stretched one hand back for Bunny also.
Something stirred in her heart, and she reached out for the girl’s hand, scooting in close so the three of them were huddled up together on the sofa. Like a family, she thought. In her eyes, she felt the sting of sentimental tears. Must be the movie, she told herself, making excuses. Her heart swelled, and she squeezed Rini’s hand, and despite herself she realised she never wanted to let go.
