"Are we there yet," River panted from a few meters below where the Doctor climbed.
He glanced over his shoulder and down at her, smiling. "You sound like a spoiled child, River! We'll be there in a bit; just keep going."
"That's easy for you to say," she groused, clambering along. "We could have gone up the easy way! You've got a TARDIS."
"And you've got a vortex manipulator."
She glared at him--or, rather, what she could see of him. "Which you confiscated!"
"Calm down," he called. "Or clam up; whichever you prefer." He laughed at her frustrated groan. "Just trust me, River; this will all be worth it. Some things are worth working for." He pushed himself up one last little boost, then leaned over a ledge, holding a hand out.
River took it, a tiny sliver of her tempted to yank him back down. Gritting her teeth, she pushed her way up, letting him help her. Then, she slumped to the ground, getting her breath back.
Once she was settled, she finally took a look around--and was instantly awestruck.
This high up the mountain, they were past the cloud cover. Up above, the stars twinkled faintly, their light blotted out by the glow of an immense blue giant star that looked almost close enough to touch. It was a breathtaking view.
"I told you so," she heard the Doctor smugly murmur.
